The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired in value.

We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to.

About Us

The Cass County Sustainability Committee (CCSC) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote sustainabile community.

Our Mission

To promote a community that is sustainable-environmentally, socially, and economically-by serving as a local source of information and education and by sponsoring activities to encourage community participation.

Sustainability

There are many ways to define sustainability. The simplest definition is: A sustainable society is one that can persist over generations, one that is farseeing enough, flexible enough, and wise enough not to undermine either its physical or its social systems of support.

-Donella Meadows, Co-Author, Beyond the Limits

What we do

The CCSC strives to increase understanding and awareness about sustainability:
  • what sustainability is
  • choices we can each make that will contribute to sustainability
  • the benefits of making choices based on their environmental, social, and economical effects.
The CCSC provides an opportunity for involvement by anyone interested in supporting our mission (students, residents, business ownere, public officials, etc.) by working on any of a variety of sustainability issues such as energy efficiency, transportation, natural areas, locally and sustainabily grown foods, low impact development, clean air and water, land use, and waste reduction.

How we do it

Through grant funding the CCSC:
  • developed and distributed educational materials to inform the community about the benefits of recycling and how to recycle in Cass County at the scheduled mobile recycling events arranged through a partnership of CCSC and Town & Country Disposal, Inc.
  • worked to benefit water quality by constructing a school/community rain garden and providing educational programs to the community about point source and non-point source water pollution.
  • developed and distributed advertising messages to inform about expanded recycling opportunities in Cass County.
